PVC Leggings

From LoveToKnow Womens-Fashion

They may not be the top item on everyone's lists, but PVC leggings definitely have their time and place. After all, leggings of all kinds have established themselves as necessities for the style-conscious, fashion-forward woman. Some are more wearable and everyday-appropriate than others – think basic cotton – while others boast a distinctly edgier vibe.

About PVC

PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic plastic material that is extremely shiny. It's used for a number of purposes, but it's relation to fashion is usually associated with skin-tight, body-hugging garments that gleam in the light. In fact, the effect is not unlike a second skin, or a coat of slick paint covering the body. It may sound a bit shocking to some, but others embrace the look wholeheartedly.

PVC Leggings

So shiny they almost look wet, PVC leggings adhere to the body in a way even a basic pair of leggings can't. Their ultra-glossy material renders them daring and rock star-worthy, and it can take some serious moxie to even consider purchasing a pair, let alone wearing them! Many women have been influenced, though, by the growing popularity of PVC leggings in celebrity culture. Spotted on the likes of Katie Holmes, Cheryl Cole, Madonna and Victoria Beckham, these sleek pants have become a bit more mainstream thanks to these glowing endorsements.

How to Wear Them

Of course, wearing PVC leggings – or "liquid" leggings, as they're often referred to – can be a bit of a fashion risk. It's not just any woman who can slither into a pair and walk out the door with her head held high. These types of leggings only work when the rest of the outfit is in complete agreement with them – in other words, if the top, shoes or handbag (or all three!) is wrong, then the leggings won't look attractive.

Contrast

Think of what makes them stand out to begin with. It's their brilliant sheen and cool material, of course. Make the most of this by contrasting them with something completely different. You wouldn't want to wear your liquid leggings with a leather vest or anything that competes for attention in the same way. Go the opposite route, instead. For example, a chunky boyfriend cardigan over a draped tank top softens up sleek, dramatic leggings. Similarly, a floaty tunic with luxurious, feminine details (like lace trim or pearl embellishments) is a great companion for those hot leggings. If you'd rather keep it simple, a slouchy T-shirt with a necklace or two is a perfect choice. Want to smarten up the look from head to toe? Try a polished blazer over a sleek white tank top.

The Right Shoes

Shoes matter, too – a lot. Though it's tempting to wear a pair of cute ballet flats, the truth is that liquid leggings look better with a pair of teetering, sky-high heels. You know the ones – you tend to avoid wearing them because they may hurt just a little bit, but they look amazing. If ever you do decide to wear them, slip them on with your PVC leggings. The effect is strong and enigmatic, and you'll undoubtedly turn heads – but that's usually the point when one is wearing pants as brazen as these!

Where to Purchase

They might be considered something of a trendy item while leggings continue to enjoy their moment in the spotlight, but liquid leggings might endure simply by virtue of the fact that they aren't as popular as their more basic, run-of-the-mill siblings. Check out the following boutiques from time to time for great selections:

  • Nordstrom: You generally can't go wrong at Nordstrom. The Brass Plum department for teenagers occasionally carries edgy leggings like these. You'll also find great tops to complete the look!
  • Net-a-Porter: If you don't mind going a little high-end, Net-a-Porter is a good choice. Here you'll find designer name leggings, usually at full prices. This is ideal for the woman who really loves her PVC leggings and plans to wear them frequently.
  • Dillard's: Don't want to break the bank on an item you may not even end up wearing? Head to Dillard's, where you'll find liquid leggings for as little as $19.
