Jennifer Lopez Clothing Line
From LoveToKnow Womens-Fashion
The Jennifer Lopez clothing line is another way the singer/dancer/actress has expanded her business empire.
Jennifer Lopez Clothing Line History
Under the helm of designer Tommy Hilfiger's brother Andy, the Jennifer Lopez clothing line has become a bona fide success. Although Andy worked for older brother Tommy for over a decade, he definitely did not ride the coattails of his famous brother on the road to fashion success. Andy helped build the Hilfiger brand by starting the accessories line that includes the extremely popular handbags, hats, belts and outerwear. Andy left his brother's company in order to start his own brand, Sweetface Fashion, which has been the home to Jennifer Lopez's line since 2003.
It should be noted, however, that Andy has left Sweetface Fashion to run the Tommy Hilfiger empire. No worries, though; he still owns 50 percent of the company, which continues to generate a healthy revenue, to the tune of around $250 million per year.
PETA Controversy
Lopez loves fur and this love translated into her clothing line as many pieces, especially the outerwear, were designed with fur in mind. At the premiere of her 2005 film Monster-in-Law, PETA protested Lopez's use of fur in her clothing line. Lopez responded by saying that she was "open to being educated" on the subject.
There's been no word on whether Lopez is planning on discontinuing or at least switching to faux fur in her clothing lines. Her 2008 Sweetface runway show did not, however, feature a whole lot of fur, though there was some leather in there.
No More JLo
Just as Jennifer Lopez dropped her JLo moniker, so has her clothing line. In 2007, she decided that the JLo label would be discontinued. It was not that her clothing line was shutting its doors; she was simply re-branding. She now sells her clothing under the labels Sweetface and Just Sweet.
Though the JLo label has been dropped from her clothing line, she is planning on expanding it and also has an exercise line in development. Lopez, who recently dropped her baby weight after giving birth to twins Max and Emme, is focusing on dance and yoga gear as well as a line of shoes.
Just Sweet Clothing Line
After dropping the JLo label, which focused on mainly jeans, t-shirts and casual wear, Lopez decided she still wanted to do a line of chic, casual and cutting edge clothing, so she and Hilfiger created Just Sweet. This line includes everything from handbags to hats and is moderately priced. Most items are sold for under $100.
Sweetface Clothing Line
The Sweetface clothing line includes more sophisticated, high end clothing. The design of Sweetface clothing is geared more toward formal parties and events and less toward the every day sort of style offered by Just Sweet. This line also has the women's designer fashion price tag, so expect to pay upwards of $300 for a cashmere sweater.
Well Received Fashion
The often very catty and very competitive fashion world seems to have received all of Lopez's lines of clothing pretty well. The only wide criticism she has received is from women. Lopez has claimed to design her clothes to fit myriad body shapes, but her use of stick thin models in her runway show and her catalog have a lot of women doubting the clothes were designed around an average woman's curvy body. Many have found this to be a contradiction, given that Lopez is known for her curvaceous figure.
