Launching the Bitten Clothing Line

On the heels of the highly successful (and greatly missed) HBO series Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker decided to parlay her success into a new, moderately priced clothing line. The line was once sold exclusively at Steve and Barry's stores, but given their financial difficulties, she is currently shopping around at other department stores to carry her Bitten clothing line.

SJP's Goal for Bitten

When asked to explain her goals for her new clothing line, Sarah Jessica Parker stated that she wanted to offer women that may not have the financial means access to affordable, "simple, well made clothing that they could be proud of." When compared to other celebrity clothing lines such as L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez's Sweetface line and Madonna's line for H&M stores, she said that those lines in particular were very high fashion and the pieces, particularly for Madonna's line, were very provocative and sexy. While she loved the clothing these ladies designed, she believed that they didn't quite fit into an everyday woman's lifestyle…everyday.

Given that the average mom isn't going to wear a pair of $150 L.A.M.B. shoes to their kids' early morning spring soccer games, this statement appears to be true. Not that L.A.M.B. and other celebrity clothing lines aren't cute, but the majority of the Bitten line items are priced under $20, which appeals much more to the average women than a high priced pair of tennis shoes.

Not at All Carrie Bradshaw

When Sarah Jessica Parker first announced that she was launching a clothing line, many thought that her clothes were going to be designed more with Carrie Bradshaw in mind. Bitten is far from some of the super fun, and sometimes weird, clothing choices of Parker's alter ego. The styles are very basic and the clothing is extremely simple in sizes ranging from 2 to 22. This wide range of sizes also reflects the body of the average woman, allowing them to dress for their body types. The Bitten clothing line includes your basic pieces like:

• Printed tees
• Jeans
• Simple dresses
• Printed tank tops
• Shorts
• Lingerie
• Shoes
• Sleepwear
• Affordable cashmere sweaters

If you're looking for something a bit more funky, check out the line of accessories. Bitten accessories include items like multi-chain necklaces, chunky jewelry, wide belts and fun scarves.

The Fashion Public's Reception of Bitten

Many in the fashion industry knew what to expect from this line - not high fashion, but functional fashion. The reception to Bitten has been positive, but still sort of lukewarm, mostly due to the purely simple nature of the items. The Bitten line has clothing that is not too spectacular, but not too boring either. Again, Sarah Jessica's goal with Bitten was to design clothes that fit into the everyday woman's life, not the lives of multimillionaire celebrities who attend fabulous red carpet events on a regular basis. That's not to mention that spending a week's worth of grocery money on shoes in no big deal to wealthy celebs!

So, while she may not have evoked "oohs and ahhs" from the fashionistas of the world, the average woman's review of Bitten clothes has been very positive.

Finding Bitten

Though her clothes have struck a chord with the masses, with Steve and Barry's stores closing their doors across the nation, many women are scrambling to find their favorite pieces of Bitten clothing. Though Parker has stated on numerous occasions that she has received many offers from other department stores, there is no word yet as to whether or not she has settled on any of them. The best way, for now, to find Bitten clothes is via an online auction site such as eBay.
